5 Questions with… Tyo

1. What’s your name, where are you from, and what’s your role at BlueGreen Tanzania Safaris?

Tanzania Safari

My name is Tyo, and I’m from Denmark with roots in Ethiopia. With my mother having spent part of her childhood in Moshi, Tanzania, I have travelled a lot to East Africa throughout my life. In 2018, I visited Zanzibar for the first time and immediately fell in love with the island and its people. First I commuted between Denmark and Zanzibar. In the summer of 2024, however, I moved here and now live on this beautiful island with my husband, who is originally from Arusha. I now travel frequently between Zanzibar and Arusha, which, in my opinion, are the two best places in Tanzania!

I have been working as a content writer and translator for BlueGreen Tanzania Safaris and Africa Safari Trips since May 2025. I translate website texts, newsletters, and travel proposals from English into Danish and also manage the images for the website and our social media channels on top of it.

2. What’s your favourite destination in Tanzania and why?

I can’t choose just one place. To me it’s both Zanzibar (on the south/east coast) and Arusha, because you get the best of both worlds: beautiful beaches, palm trees, and warmth on one side and the fresh mountain air, stunning mountains on the other – Arusha is also the starting point for the northern safari routes with beautiful waterfalls and breathtaking nature.

  • 3. Which safari experience would you recommend to someone visiting for the first time?
  • If you have many days to explore Tanzania and crave the full safari experience, you should visit Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater . Should you only have a couple of days to spend, I would recommend Tarangire National Park , which I call “the little Serengeti” and is also known as the elephants’ paradise. It’s a beautiful park with plenty of wildlife.

4. What’s the most unforgettable wildlife moment you’ve had?

It must have been on my first safari: a huge elephant family walked past the jeep. The large bull elephant turned around after all the others had passed, and his massive ears almost brushed my window. It was such a fantastic experience, with so many elephants so close – from tiny babies to the females leading the herd and the enormous bull elephants protecting the herd.

5. Is there a destination in Tanzania you haven’t been to yet but would love to explore one day?
I’ve always dreamed of snorkelling with whale sharks at Mafia Island. I love the ocean, exploring life beneath the surface, and encountering large marine animals, so experiencing this would be absolutely unforgettable. I hope it will finally come true in 2026!
Bonus: What’s one tip you always share with guests before they travel to Tanzania?
Make your experience as local as possible. If you’re staying at a large lodge/resort, make sure to get out into the villages, try the local food, and learn how to greet people in Swahili.
Remember, you’re on holiday, so take it easy. Things don’t always work the same way as at home, but it all works out in the end. People in Tanzania are very helpful, something you really notice when travelling around the country.
